Auguste Clésinger was a 19th-century French sculptor and painter whose work left a mark on the Paris salons and the artistic imagination of his time. Trained in the family tradition, he exhibited early at the Salon de Paris; his career drew widespread attention in 1847 with the sculpture Woman Bitten by a Serpent, modeled from casts of his model Apollonie Sabatier and praised by critics for its blend of verism and sensuality. He also produced bust portraits of cultural figures such as Rachel Félix and Théophile Gautier, and large-scale works such as the statue of Louise of Savoy in the Jardin du Luxembourg. Clésinger worked on religious and funerary commissions, signing projects for chapels and the Chopin monument at Père Lachaise—including the death mask and casts of the composer’s hands—which reinforced his role in the funerary repertoire of 19th-century Paris. He received the Légion d’honneur and was promoted to officer in 1864. His output in marble, bronze and plaster is preserved in institutions such as the Musée d’Orsay, the Petit Palais and museums in Besançon, where one finds an aesthetic that seeks anatomical truth without concessions to academicism, securing his place among the realist sculptors of the period.
