Barbara Barrie is an American actress and author whose career spans theater, film, and television. On stage she became known for both classical and contemporary roles: she worked with repertory companies, made her Broadway debut in the 1950s, and originated the role of Sarah in Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company, earning a Tony nomination. Her off-Broadway work brought critical awards, including an Obie and a Drama Desk, for notable performances. In film, Barrie achieved her first major recognition in 1964 for her role as Julie in One Potato, Two Potato, a performance that won her Best Actress at Cannes. In 1979 she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Evelyn Stohler in Breaking Away, a film also nominated for Best Picture. She also appeared in popular titles such as Private Benjamin and Judy Berlin, receiving further recognition for her work in independent film. On television she accumulated significant appearances beginning in the 1950s, with recurring and guest roles on series such as The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, and the sitcom Barney Miller, as well as in TV adaptations and movies. Her career is notable for the variety of characters she has played and for consistent performances across different media, leaving a mark on both musical theater and dramatic cinema.
