Barbara of Brandenburg-Ansbach-Kulmbach was born a princess of Brandenburg-Ansbach and became landgravine of Leuchtenberg by marriage. The daughter of Margrave Frederick II of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Sophia Jagiellon, she was part of the dynastic networks that linked the German houses to the Jagiellons of Poland, a position that reinforced her matrimonial and succession role in the 16th century. In 1527 she married Count George III of Leuchtenberg; the union involved substantial dowries and consolidated territorial and financial alliances between the houses. Her family played a part in restoring the landgraviate’s finances, a process in which her son’s marriage to Mathilde de la Marck-Arenberg—arranged by her brother Albert—proved decisive. Barbara had several children, among them Louis Henry, who succeeded as Count of Leuchtenberg, and Elisabeth, who married John VI of Nassau-Dillenburg, helping to extend the family’s political influence in subsequent generations. She died in 1552 and was buried in the Church of the Assumption in Pfreimd, where a marble tombstone bearing her arms marks her memory.
