Beniamino Gigli was an Italian tenor of international renown, often cited as one of the leading exponents of bel canto in the early twentieth century. Known for the range, evenness, and tonal richness of his voice, he earned a reputation as a successor to—and frequent comparison with—Enrico Caruso, though he preferred to be recognized by his own name. He trained in Rome and achieved his first successes in Italian theatres; his professional debut took place in 1914 in Rovigo.

Gigli’s career was established in major houses: in 1918 he sang at La Scala under Arturo Toscanini, and beginning in 1920 he became the Metropolitan Opera’s principal tenor for twelve consecutive seasons, performing repertoire spanning verismo, bel canto, and Italian lyric opera. He was also a celebrated interpreter of works by Donizetti, Puccini, and Verdi, as well as realistic roles such as Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana.

Offstage, Gigli appeared in films and recorded an extensive repertoire of Neapolitan and romantic songs, helping to popularize Italian music. After returning to Italy in the 1930s, he remained active until the mid-1950s, leaving a substantial recorded legacy and receiving posthumous honors and awards.
