René Jules Gustave Coty was a French politician whose long local and national career culminated in the presidency of the Republic from 1954 to 1959; he was the second and last head of state of the Fourth Republic. Trained in philosophy and law at the University of Caen, he worked as a lawyer specializing in maritime and commercial law in Le Havre before entering public life as a municipal councilor and departmental councillor. Over the following decades he held seats in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, occupied several short-term executive posts, and served on the General Council of Seine-Inférieure. In the postwar period he took part in the Constituent Assembly and led the Independent Republican Group, later drawing closer to the National Centre of Independents and Peasants. Coty’s presidency was marked by the parliamentary instability typical of the Fourth Republic and by the crisis in Algeria. In 1958 he played a decisive role in inviting Charles de Gaulle to form a government capable of restoring institutional order, a move that paved the way for constitutional revision and the end of the Fourth Republic. After leaving the Élysée Palace, he served on the Constitutional Council until his death in 1962.
