Bernard Cazeneuve is a French politician and lawyer associated mainly with the centre-left. Over his career he held local and national offices: he was mayor of Cherbourg-Octeville (2001–2012), served as a deputy for constituencies in Manche across several legislatures, and held ministerial posts in the governments of François Hollande. He became known nationally as Minister Delegate for European Affairs (2012) and, after the fall of Budget Minister Jérôme Cahuzac, took over the budget portfolio in 2013. In 2014 he was appointed Minister of the Interior, a post he held through significant periods for internal security in France, gaining attention for crisis management and coordination of public order policies. In December 2016 he was designated Prime Minister, a role he exercised until May 2017, when the new president took office. Throughout his public life, Cazeneuve advocated regional development—notably projects linked to the maritime sector and the nuclear industry in the Cotentin—and participated in parliamentary inquiries, such as the investigation into the Karachi attack. After leaving government, he returned to private activity while remaining involved in politics, breaking with his party in 2022 over disagreements about electoral alliances.
