Bernard Pons was a physician and French political figure who for decades was associated with the Gaullist right. Trained as a physician and working as a general practitioner in the Lot, he began his political career as a deputy in 1967 and became a close collaborator of Georges Pompidou and a loyal ally of Jacques Chirac. He served multiple parliamentary terms and held executive posts, including secretary-general of the RPR (1979–1984) and several ministerial portfolios.

In government he was notable as Secretary of State for Agriculture and later as Minister of Overseas Departments and Territories (1986–1988) and as Minister of Transport and Equipment during Chirac’s administration. His work in the overseas territories included fiscal measures to encourage investment and direct involvement in managing the Ouvéa grotto crisis, an episode that marked his career and provoked controversy over the state’s response.

A deputy in various constituencies and a councilor of Paris, Pons also served a term in the European Parliament and chaired the association supporting Jacques Chirac. He withdrew from active politics in the early 2000s, remaining a periodic public presence and leaving a career linked to the reconciliation of Gaullism with republican institutions.
