William Richards “Bill” Bennett was a Canadian politician who led the province of British Columbia as its 27th premier from 1975 to 1986. The son of fellow premier W. A. C. Bennett, Bill built a new political coalition that brought together liberals, social conservatives and corporate sectors, organizing the so‑called “Baby Blue Machine” inspired by Ontario’s political machine. During his three terms he promoted urban growth and infrastructure: his government invested heavily in projects such as securing Expo 86, building BC Place Stadium, the SkyTrain system, the Vancouver Convention Centre and the Coquihalla Highway. He also supported the establishment of the province’s Winter and Summer Games and the creation of the British Columbia Resources Investment Corporation (BCRIC). Bennett’s legacy is mixed: admired by conservatives as a period of economic dynamism and major works, it was also marked by financial controversies. Ten years after leaving office he was implicated in the so‑called “Doman Scandal” and was sanctioned for securities violations. He nevertheless received the Order of British Columbia in 2007 and had a bridge in Kelowna named in his honour.
