Bill Frist is a physician, businessman, and former U.S. senator who represented Tennessee in the United States Senate from 1995 to 2007. A member of the Republican Party, he served as Senate Majority Leader from 2003 to 2007, a position in which he played a significant role in advancing measures from President George W. Bush’s agenda, including tax reforms and modernization of Medicare. He kept his pledge to limit his service to two terms. A Harvard-trained physician, he specialized in cardiothoracic surgery and was a pioneer in transplants in the American South: he founded the Vanderbilt Transplant Center and performed the first heart‑lung and lung transplants in Tennessee. Over two decades in clinical practice he participated in more than 150 transplants and published over 100 peer‑reviewed articles. After leaving the Senate, Frist continued to work in public health, philanthropy, and health-care investment. He chairs the global board of The Nature Conservancy, is a partner in health‑care investment funds, and co‑chairs a project at the Bipartisan Policy Center. He has also hosted a podcast on the intersection of politics, medicine, and innovation.
