Märta Birgit Nilsson was one of the most celebrated dramatic sopranos of the twentieth century, renowned for her command of the repertoires of Wagner, Verdi, Puccini and Richard Strauss. Known for her power and vocal stamina — a bright timbre often described as “trumpet-like” — she built an international career over four decades and left an extensive recorded and live-performance legacy. She made her debut at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1946; in the following years she distinguished herself at houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, where she sang 223 times in 16 roles, and at the Bayreuth Festival, becoming a benchmark for demanding parts such as Isolde, Brünnhilde, Sieglinde, Turandot and Elektra. The live recording of Tristan und Isolde at Bayreuth (1966) is frequently cited among the most significant interpretations of that repertoire. Beyond her artistic acclaim, Nilsson attracted public attention for events offstage, including a tax dispute with the United States that prevented her from entering the country for several years. Her frank personality and sense of humor also shaped her public image. Posthumous recognition includes the creation in 2009 of an award in her name in Sweden, intended to honor outstanding lyrical performers.
