Blackbear, stage name of Matthew Tyler Musto, is an American musician, singer, songwriter and producer known for his work in alternative pop and contemporary R&B. Emerging from the independent scene through high-school band projects, he established himself as a solo artist after adopting the Blackbear moniker and releasing a series of EPs and albums that blend personal themes with modern production. Over the course of his career he has been noted both for collaborations with artists such as Justin Bieber, Mike Posner, Machine Gun Kelly, Billie Eilish and Pharrell Williams and for writing hit songs for other performers — including co-writing Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” which reached the top of the charts. His work as a producer and songwriter made him a frequent partner in cross-genre collaborations and joint projects, such as the duo Mansionz with Mike Posner. On record he gained prominence with albums such as Deadroses, Digital Druglord and Everything Means Nothing, as well as commercially successful singles. He also became known for adopting independent monetization strategies on digital platforms in the early 2010s. Blackbear’s work is characterized by autobiographical themes, experiences with health and addiction, and an aesthetic that mixes pop melodies with confessional lyrics, earning him recognition on the contemporary pop scene.
