Chaim Azriel Weizmann was a chemist and Zionist leader, recognized as a central figure in the creation of the State of Israel and its first president, a post he held from 1949 until his death in 1952. A scientist specialized in industrial biochemistry, he is considered a pioneer of industrial fermentation after developing the acetone–butanol–ethanol process; the acetone produced by this process proved decisive for the manufacture of British explosives during the First World War. As a political leader, Weizmann played a key role in securing the Balfour Declaration (1917) and in the diplomatic efforts that led to the United States recognizing the new State of Israel in 1948. In addition to his diplomatic work, he made major contributions to the country's scientific and educational infrastructure: he founded the Sieff Research Institute in Rehovot (later the Weizmann Institute of Science) and participated in the establishment of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Born in what is now Belarus, Weizmann combined a scientific career with Zionist activism throughout his life, leaving institutional and intellectual legacies that shaped both Israeli science and the early political course of the newly created state.
