Robert Lee “Bob” Hayes was a sprinter and American football player whose career combined Olympic and professional successes. As a sprinter he rose to prominence in the 1960s: at the 1964 Tokyo Games he won the 100 m gold (officially recorded as 10.0 s) and was part of the 4×100 m relay that set a world record; he also held several world records in short sprints and was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. His running style—characterized by long strides and powerful drive—drew attention and produced historic performances in the 60, 100, and 220‑yard races. After the Olympics he moved permanently to American football, playing wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys for 11 seasons. His speed changed how defenses defended receivers, helping to accelerate the use of zonal coverage and the bump‑and‑run technique. He was named to the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor and, posthumously, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, becoming one of the few athletes to combine an Olympic gold medal with a Super Bowl ring. A product of Florida A&M in track and field, Hayes left a legacy on both the track and the gridiron, remembered for a rare combination of explosive speed and success in two professional sports.
