Bobby McFerrin is an American musician best known for using the voice as an instrument. He became a global figure with the hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy," which earned him three Grammys in 1989, but his career spans jazz, classical and pop, with recordings in which he is often the sole performer, imitating instruments and vocal textures.

The son of operatic baritone Robert McFerrin, he trained as a pianist before dedicating himself to singing; he developed a rare technique, with a range of about four octaves and the ability to switch between falsetto and low registers, produce vocal percussion and even sing in overtone style. That eclecticism led to collaborations with artists such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul and Yo-Yo Ma.

In addition to his solo career, McFerrin served as artistic director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and conducted several symphony orchestras in North America, incorporating vocal improvisation into the classical repertoire. He also created the collective Voicestra and takes part in music education programs, establishing a legacy as both a vocal innovator and as an educator and conductor.
