Boby Lapointe (Robert Jean François Joseph Lapointe) was a French singer-songwriter and actor whose work was notable for its linguistic inventiveness. Known for songs full of puns, spoonerisms and sound play, he developed a singular style that combined erudite humor with vocal theatricality, becoming a distinctive figure of French song in the 1950s and 1960s. His musical career gained momentum when artists and filmmakers took notice: he appeared in films by François Truffaut and worked in Parisian cabarets such as Le Cheval d’Or and Les Trois Baudets, where he formed artistic ties with figures like Georges Brassens and Pierre Perret. He recorded hits such as "Marcelle," "Ta Katie t’a quitté" and "Saucisson de cheval," which secured him regular presence in the media and on stage. Beyond music, Lapointe explored writing and film acting, playing supporting roles in works by Claude Sautet and other directors. In the late 1960s he also developed the “système bibi-binaire,” a representation of numbers that anticipated reflections on numeration and computing. His work left a legacy through its verbal originality and its ability to translate language games into song and film, influencing generations of lyricists and comedians in France.
