Bradley Wiggins is a former English professional cyclist who built a career on both the track and the road from 2001 to 2016. Initially prominent in individual pursuit and Madison events, he won multiple world titles and became Britain’s most decorated Olympic cyclist during his career, earning eight medals across five Olympic Games. In 2012 he reached the height of his fame by becoming the first Briton to win the Tour de France, the same year he took Olympic gold in the individual time trial.
Beyond Grand Tour victories and championship titles, Wiggins set the hour record in 2015 with a distance of 54.526 km, and received honors such as the Vélo d'Or and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He was appointed a CBE in 2009 and was knighted in 2013 for services to cycling. In 2014 he founded the WIGGINS team and remained an active presence in track and road events until his retirement, announced in December 2016.
His career was also marked by controversy: UK inquiries and reports identified the use, under therapeutic use exemptions, of corticosteroids by the support team around him, a finding that prompted debate over team practices and anti-doping rules. However, there were no disciplinary sanctions that resulted in a suspension of his career.
