Brendan Canty is an American musician, composer, producer and filmmaker, best known as the drummer for the influential band Fugazi. Emerging from the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene, he began in groups such as Deadline and Rites of Spring before joining Fugazi in 1987, where he remained until the band's indefinite hiatus in 2003. His technique and rhythmic sensitivity shaped the group's sound: many riffs and structures originated in rehearsals with Canty, and he also contributed bass lines and piano compositions.
Beyond band work, Canty built a substantial career in film scoring and music production. He composed scores primarily for documentaries for outlets such as National Geographic and Discovery, and contributed music to series and films including productions shown on the Sundance Channel and ESPN. He has also produced and mixed records for Washington, D.C. artists and appeared as a guest musician on projects by Bob Mould and others.
In audiovisual work, he co‑founded the production company Trixie and produced the Burn to Shine series, which documents live performances by bands in houses slated for demolition. His body of work represents a significant contribution to the alternative scene and to music for film and television, with an influence acknowledged by peers and later generations of drummers.
