Brett Whiteley was an Australian artist whose work shaped the visual arts scene from the 1960s through the 1980s. Known for both figurative paintings and abstract series, Whiteley rose to international prominence while still young: the Tate acquired his work and he received important grants and awards during his career. He lived and painted in several countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy and the United States, broadening his aesthetic experience and subject matter.
His output ranged across landscapes, human figures, urban scenes and large-scale compositions, combining painting, collage and experimental elements. His legacy endures in the formal and thematic impact he had on generations of Australian artists and in the circulation of his works through major institutions.
