Ian William Richardson, CBE, was a Scottish actor of film, theatre and television whose career spanned several decades and media. Trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, he joined the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and was a founding member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he distinguished himself in plays such as Marat/Sade and in classical productions that established his reputation in British theatre. In musical theatre and film he played memorable roles — among them the priest in Man of La Mancha (1972) — and appeared in films such as Brazil (1985) and Dark City (1998). On television he achieved international recognition for his portrayal of the Machiavellian politician Francis Urquhart in the House of Cards trilogy, a performance that earned him the BAFTA for Best Television Actor and wide critical praise. Richardson was also noted for roles in televised literary adaptations, such as Bill Haydon in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and for playing Sherlock Holmes in BBC productions. He was appointed CBE in 1989 and continued to alternate between film, theatre and television into the early 2000s, leaving a legacy as a versatile performer and a respected figure in British drama.
