Bruno Benedetto Rossi was an Italian‑American experimental physicist whose work shaped particle physics, cosmic‑ray research, and the birth of X‑ray astronomy. Trained in Bologna, he became known in the 1930s for refining the electronic coincidence circuit, a key instrument for detecting relativistic particles and for the logic electronics that followed. Using that apparatus, he carried out pioneering experiments on the east‑west asymmetry of cosmic rays, demonstrating the charged nature of these radiations. Targeted by Italy’s racial laws, he emigrated in 1938 and held fellowships in Europe before settling in the United States, where he worked with figures such as Enrico Fermi. During World War II he contributed to radar development at MIT and led the team that performed the RaLa experiments at Los Alamos. After the war he resumed studies of cosmic rays and of spaceborne instruments. In the 1960s Rossi was a pioneer in X‑ray sky exploration and in space plasma physics: his detectors on probes such as Explorer 10 identified the magnetopause and initiated the discovery of extrasolar X‑ray sources, including Scorpius X‑1. His technical and experimental legacy profoundly influenced methods and instrumentation in high‑energy physics and space astronomy.
