Bud Shank (Clifford Everett Shank Jr.) was an American saxophonist and flutist whose career spanned the West Coast jazz scene from the 1940s into the 2000s. Based in Los Angeles from the 1950s, he was an active participant in the West Coast movement and built a reputation as both a studio musician and club artist, collaborating with figures such as Stan Kenton, Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker.

In 1953, his partnership with Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida produced a pioneering record that blended jazz and Brazilian rhythms — the so-called “samba-jazz” — anticipating and, according to critics, influencing directions that later developed into bossa nova. The collaboration yielded several albums, including Brazilliance and Holiday in Brazil, and influenced Brazilian composers such as Antônio Carlos Jobim.

In addition to his recordings with Almeida, Shank released his own projects and took part in notable sessions, including the flute solo on “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas & the Papas. Over the decades he balanced touring and festival appearances with studio work; he also formed groups such as the L.A. Four and, in 2005, the Bud Shank Big Band. He died in 2009, leaving a legacy as a versatile performer and a pioneer in blending jazz with Brazilian music.
