Buster Crabbe was an American Olympic athlete and actor whose career moved between sports and entertainment. As a swimmer, he won bronze in the 1,500 m in Amsterdam in 1928 and gold in the 400 m freestyle at the 1932 Los Angeles Games, results that launched him into film.
From 1933 he appeared in more than a hundred films and serials, becoming a face of pulp cinema: he played three very popular 1930s comic-strip heroes—Tarzan, Flash Gordon, and Buck Rogers—roles that made him a favorite with both young and adult audiences. He worked in a variety of genres, from adventure and “jungle man” pictures to westerns, including features and serials for studios such as Universal.
After the war he also moved into television, hosting children’s programs and starring in the series Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion (1955–1957). With the decline of film opportunities, he turned to business off-screen, working as an entrepreneur and broker, while not entirely abandoning appearances in programs and archival material that preserved his popular legacy.
