Buster Welch was an American cutting horse trainer whose career shaped the discipline in the decades after World War II. Known for competitive success and for developing exceptional horses, he won four NCHA World Championships and five Futurity World Championships, and trained iconic mounts such as Marion's Girl, Chickasha Mike, Rey Jay's Pete, Dry Doc and Peppy San Badger. His skill in “putting the finish on” horses helped establish prominent bloodlines in the working Quarter Horse. A Texas native, Welch learned his craft in the field, working on large ranches such as the 6666 and King Ranch before turning to professional training. His relationships with influential owners and breeders — including Marion Flynt — enabled him to run championship campaigns nationwide, raising both the animals’ profiles and the visibility of cutting as a competitive sport. Over his life he received numerous honors: induction into the NCHA Hall of Fame, the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, the NCHA Rider Hall of Fame and the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and the National Golden Spur Award in 2012 for contributions to the livestock industry. His legacy lives on in the genetics of competition lines and in training methods that influenced generations of cutting professionals.
