Camilo José Cela was one of the leading Spanish novelists of the twentieth century, known for renewing Spanish fiction with works of strong social and stylistic impact. His striking debut, La familia de Pascual Duarte (1942), inaugurated the so-called tremendismo with raw prose about violence and fate; he followed it with Pabellón de reposo and Viaje a la Alcarria, which explored existential themes and rural life. The work that established his critical prestige was La colmena (1951), a landmark of 1950s social realism whose publication had been hindered by Spanish censorship.

Over the course of his career, Cela alternated formal experimentation — as in San Camilo 1936 and Cristo contra Arizona — with portrayals of Galicia, his native region, in novels such as Mazurca para dos muertos and Madera de ley. He received national and international honors, including the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1989, and was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy from 1957 until his death.

A controversial figure in life because of his involvement with institutions of the Franco regime and for succession disputes after his death, he left a vast and influential literary legacy, with works translated and studied for their contribution to social realism and narrative experimentation.
