Carl August von Steinheil was a physicist, inventor, engineer and astronomer born in Alsace who built his career in Bavaria, where he developed both academic and industrial work. A professor of mathematics and physics at the University of Munich from 1832 to 1849, he also worked on scientific instruments and experimental photography, producing in 1839 negatives and positives by his own processes — the so-called “Steinheil method” — among the first in Germany.
Across the 1840s and 1850s Steinheil took part in state-level technical projects: he worked on systems of weights and measures in Naples, led telegraph initiatives for the Austro-Germanic empire and collaborated on the establishment of the Swiss telegraph. He designed innovations for telegraphic transmission and coding, although the code associated with his name was superseded by Morse code.
In 1854 he founded C. A. Steinheil & Söhne, an optical-instrument works that produced telescopes, spectrometers and photometers for European observatories and introduced mirror silvering techniques in collaboration with contemporaries such as Justus Liebig and Léon Foucault. His legacy combines contributions to observational astronomy, optics and the early development of scientific photography.
