Carl Schmitt was a German jurist, philosopher, and political theorist whose work profoundly influenced twentieth-century debates on the state, sovereignty, and constitutional law. A university professor and prolific author, he wrote across several fields—from international law to political theory, intellectual history, and exegesis of classical authors—and developed key concepts about authority, the state of exception, and the relationship between legal order and political power.
His public career included affiliation and collaboration with the Nazi regime: he held academic and administrative positions during the Third Reich, drafted legal justifications for authoritarian measures, and advanced constitutional interpretations that facilitated the concentration of power. At the same time, his theoretical work affected thinkers across diverse traditions, provoking intense debate about the limits of critique of liberal constitutionalism.
Schmitt’s legacy is deeply controversial: on one hand, his analyses continue to be studied for their conceptual sharpness; on the other, his participation in and support for the Nazi regime warrant strong critical caution in receiving his ideas.
