Caroline Lucretia Herschel was a German‑British astronomer whose career broke gender barriers in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Hanover into a family of musicians, she moved to England to live with her brother William Herschel and became his assistant, teaching herself astronomy and mathematics. Her scientific work includes the discovery of several comets — among them 35P/Herschel–Rigollet — and deep‑sky objects such as the galaxy M110 (NGC 205). In 1787 she was appointed Assistant to the King’s Astronomer, becoming the first woman to hold that post and to receive official pay for scientific contributions. Over her life she received several honors, notably the Royal Astronomical Society’s Gold Medal in 1828 and a gold medal for science from the King of Prussia in 1846. Her work combined close collaboration with William and independent initiatives; beyond observing, she compiled catalogues and records that supported the practical astronomy of her day. Caroline Herschel’s legacy remains a milestone in the history of science for the visibility she brought to women scientists and for her concrete contributions to knowledge of the heavens.
