Carolus Linnaeus (Carl von Linné) was a Swedish botanist, zoologist and physician whose work founded modern taxonomy. He popularized binomial nomenclature and organized scientific classification into genera and species, becoming an essential reference in the natural sciences. His work Systema Naturae, particularly the 1758/59 edition, systematized the ordering of living beings and spread a method that remains at the core of classificatory biology. Also active in academia, Linnaeus was a founder of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and a professor at Uppsala, where he directed the botanical garden and published catalogs and works such as Flora lapponica and Hortus Cliffortianus. He undertook scientific expeditions—most notably to Lapland—that produced inventories of fauna and flora and provided ethnographic and natural descriptions valuable for the time. Beyond taxonomy, Linnaeus contributed to the development of the temperature scale now known as Celsius and received intellectual recognition from contemporaries such as Rousseau and Goethe. His cultural and scientific influence in Sweden is long-lasting: his works appear in the country’s cultural canon and his likeness has been celebrated on banknotes.
