Carrie Louise Hamilton was an American actress, singer and playwright whose work spanned film, television and theatre. The daughter of comedian Carol Burnett and producer Joe Hamilton, she became known on television for playing Reggie Higgins in the final seasons of the musical series Fame (1985–1987) and on stage for portraying Maureen Johnson on the first national tour of Rent, a production that attracted considerable attention. In film, she appeared in titles such as Tokyo Pop (1988), in which she sang several songs and played a young singer in Tokyo, and had a supporting role in Cool World (1992). She also made a memorable guest appearance on television: her performance in the The X-Files episode “Monday” (1999) is remembered by audiences. Beyond her work as a performer, she collaborated with her mother on a stage adaptation of Burnett’s memoirs, Hollywood Arms, a project she did not live to see completed. She struggled with and overcame substance-abuse problems in her youth, and after her death in 2002 her legacy has been honored by initiatives bearing her name, such as the Carrie Hamilton Theatre at the Pasadena Playhouse and an educational institute dedicated to the arts.
