Cédric Villani is a French mathematician known for fundamental contributions to partial differential equations and mathematical physics. His work includes advances in kinetic theory—particularly the Boltzmann equation—and the study of Landau damping, efforts for which he was awarded the Fields Medal in 2010.
Trained and teaching at prestigious institutions such as the École Normale Supérieure and Université Claude-Bernard-Lyon I, Villani also served as director of the Institut Henri Poincaré. He has collaborated with researchers including Laurent Desvillettes, Clément Mouhot and John Lott, producing important results on convergence to equilibrium, hypocoercivity and optimal transport.
His scientific output spans articles in high-impact journals and reference books, including works on optimal transport and a memoir on hypocoercivity. He has received prizes such as the Jacques Herbrand Prize, the European Mathematical Society prize and other European honors that underscore his role in contemporary mathematics.
