César Franck was an organist and composer born in Liège who established himself in Paris’s musical life, building a reputation as an improviser and teacher. After initial training in his hometown, he moved to Paris while still young; his early compositions include piano trios and religious pieces such as the cantata Ruth. Throughout his career he devoted himself intensively to the role of organist, composing masses, motets and organ repertoire that reinforced his presence in worship and liturgical tradition. Appointed a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1872, Franck became a naturalized French citizen shortly thereafter, influencing generations of students and helping to renew the teaching of harmony and composition. His best‑known orchestral output consists of symphonic poems — among them Les Éolides, Le Chasseur maudit, Psyché and the monumental Les Béatitudes, the last of which many consider his masterpiece despite its poor reception at its only public performance in his lifetime. Franck’s legacy combines religious and chamber works with programmatic orchestral pieces; his influence extends across the French school of composition and the organ repertoire, and he remains a central figure of late Romanticism in France.
