Charles-Jean de la Vallée Poussin was a Belgian mathematician whose work shaped number theory and mathematical analysis in the early 20th century. He became renowned for proving the prime number theorem, a fundamental result published in 1896 that placed him among the leading mathematicians of his generation. His academic career took place mainly at the Catholic University of Louvain, where he succeeded his advisor in the chair of analysis and trained notable students, including Georges Lemaître.
Beyond number theory, de la Vallée Poussin contributed to approximation theory, to the teaching of the Lebesgue integral in university courses, and to potential theory and complex analysis. His Cours d’Analyse served as a reference for decades, introducing modern concepts such as the Lebesgue integral and influencing the teaching of analysis at several universities.
Active in scientific organizations, he received awards and honors, among them the title of baron bestowed by the King of the Belgians, multiple honorary doctorates, and the presidency of the International Mathematical Union. His output includes influential monographs and key articles that established methods now classic in analysis and number theory, leaving a lasting legacy in pure mathematics.
