Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff was a Scottish writer and translator best known for his monumental English translation of nearly the entire À la recherche du temps perdu by Marcel Proust, published in volumes beginning in 1922. His version established the title In Search of Lost Time in the English-speaking world and deeply shaped Proust’s reception in English literary culture. A veteran of the First World War, Scott Moncrieff served with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers; wounded at the Battle of Arras in 1917, he sustained injuries that left him lame and redirected his career toward literary and editorial work. After the war he worked in the publishing circle around Printing House Square and as a private secretary to influential figures in the press. Besides Proust, he translated texts from medieval and modern French, including notable renderings such as The Song of Roland, and published short stories and satires that reflected his cultural positions and literary rivalries. He moved to Italy in the 1920s for health reasons and lived there until his death in Rome in 1930, leaving translated work that remains a critical and editorial reference.
