Charles Lloyd is an American jazz saxophonist and flutist whose work anticipated the fusion of jazz, avant-garde music, and elements from various cultural traditions. Trained in Memphis and shaped by the local blues and gospel, he gained early recognition as an accompanist to major figures in blues and jazz before joining important groups such as Chico Hamilton’s band and Cannonball Adderley’s sextet. In the mid-1960s he launched a career as a leader, forming an emblematic quartet with Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and Cecil McBee. The live recording Forest Flower: Live at Monterey became both a commercial and critical success, extending jazz’s reach into festival audiences and FM radio and bringing the group to share stages with icons of psychedelic rock. Lloyd is noted for incorporating melodies and rhythms from other cultures into his compositions—anticipating trends in world music—and for bringing American jazz to international audiences less familiar with the genre, including tours of Europe and the then–Soviet Union. Despite periods of withdrawal, his returns in subsequent decades reaffirmed his influence and the originality of his musical voice.
