Charles Horace Mayo was an American surgeon and one of the founders of the institution that became the Mayo Clinic, internationally recognized for medical care and research. Graduating from Northwestern University in 1888, he joined the family medical practice in Rochester, Minnesota, working alongside his father William Worrall Mayo and his brother William James Mayo, and helped oversee the clinic’s transition into a nonprofit organization in 1919. Mayo worked across several surgical fields, with particular distinction in thyroid and nervous system procedures, and until 1908 he handled the clinic’s ophthalmological cases. Together with the early partners, he instituted strict sterile practices in the operating room, a decisive factor in the institution’s early success. Under his and his colleagues’ leadership a pioneering model of integrated, specialized medical practice emerged, linked institutionally to the University of Minnesota Medical School. Over his lifetime he recorded care for roughly one million patients, leaving a lasting legacy in the organization and practice of modern surgery.
