Charles Nungesser was a French military aviator and a prominent figure in aviation during the First World War. Recognized as an ace, he ranked third among French pilots with 43 aerial victories, noted for his courage and skill in dogfights that brought him wide national renown. After the war, he remained publicly active in aviation and aerial adventure. In 1927 he undertook an ambitious attempt at a nonstop transatlantic crossing between Paris and New York alongside navigator François Coli aboard the biplane L'Oiseau Blanc. They took off from Le Bourget on 8 May; the aircraft was last seen over Ireland and then disappeared. The disappearance of Nungesser and Coli became one of the mysteries of early aviation. Subsequent investigations considered a crash in the North Atlantic the most likely cause, while alternative theories suggested wreckage in Newfoundland or Maine, but the aircraft was never recovered. His disappearance and the failed attempt were commemorated nationally, with memorials and museums preserving his memory and the place he holds in the history of French aviation.
