Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish architect, designer and artist whose work became a benchmark at the turn of the 20th century. Trained in the neo‑Gothic tradition and influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, he blended elements of Art Nouveau and Japanese aesthetics to create interiors, furniture and buildings with a strong identity. His work gained attention with the Glasgow School of Art (built between 1898–1909) and the Willow Tea Rooms, projects in which he explored new relations between mass and ornament and between stone structures and wooden and metal additions.
Mackintosh also gained recognition through his collaboration with the group known as “The Four” and through international exhibitions that brought him European exposure, such as the Vienna Secession (1900). Hill House, which preserves much of its original furniture, stands as one of the most complete records of his approach to domestic decoration — including chairs and pieces that remain design icons.
His language combined pragmatic constructional solutions (such as ventilation and heating systems) with a linear, symbolic decorative syntax influenced by Celtic and Symbolist sources. Mackintosh’s legacy remains central in the history of British design and architecture, both for its formal originality and for the integration of applied arts and building.
