Charles Spindler was a multifaceted Alsatian artist—painter, illustrator, cabinetmaker specialized in marquetry, writer, and photographer—whose work developed between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th. Trained at German academies, he organized himself around the Saint-Léonard circle, promoting an applied arts project that brought together craftsmen in glasswork, ironwork, ceramics, and carpentry to revive regional traditions under the influence of Jugendstil.
His marquetry, discovered in 1893, became the most recognized visual language of his output, earning awards at universal exhibitions (Paris 1900; St. Louis 1904). At the same time he edited and illustrated works on Alsatian dress and customs and launched the Revue alsacienne illustrée to highlight local cultural production.
Author of diaries and memoirs, Spindler left valuable testimony on Alsatian life and the tensions of the First World War, adopting a critical and at times controversial stance toward postwar policies. Part of his movable estate is preserved in public collections, and his work remains a reference for Alsace’s artistic and ethnographic identity.
