Chester W. Nimitz was a fleet admiral of the United States Navy and a central figure in the Allied campaign in the Pacific during World War II. As Commander in Chief of the Pacific Forces, he coordinated naval, air, and ground operations that reversed the course of the conflict in the region, and was one of the architects of the victories at Midway, the Coral Sea, and the Solomon Islands campaign. Trained in submarines, Nimitz played a decisive role in modernizing American submersible units, including the shift from gasoline to diesel engines and support for the development of the USS Nautilus, a pioneer in nuclear propulsion. He also developed underway replenishment techniques that allowed the U.S. fleet to operate far from ports for extended periods. Appointed Fleet Admiral in 1944, he led the major operations that captured Saipan, Guam, and Tinian, and oversaw key actions such as the mining of Japanese ports by B-29s. On 2 September 1945 he signed the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo. After the war he served as Chief of Naval Operations, directing the navy’s reorganization and reduction for the peacetime era. His legacy includes logistical and naval innovations that transformed the United States’ maritime power projection; the supercarrier USS Nimitz was named in his honor.
