Chet Culver is an American politician affiliated with the Democratic Party, known for serving as the 41st governor of Iowa (2007–2011) and, before that, as the state’s secretary of state (1999–2007). Trained in political science with a master’s degree in education, he taught government and history in Des Moines schools before entering public service. He is the son of former senator John Culver.

As governor, he focused on renewable energy policy—creating the Iowa Power Fund and promoting the state as a center for alternative energy—and on scientific and social measures, such as lifting certain restrictions on embryonic stem cell research and proposing investment in a research center at the University of Iowa. He also signed the first increase in the state minimum wage in a decade.

Culver was active in disaster response: his handling of the 2008 floods was well received by the public, and he proposed state relief funds in 2010. After leaving the executive office, he founded a consulting firm in the energy sector and served on federal agricultural credit boards appointed by Democratic administrations, a post he resumed in 2022.

His public legacy is associated with promoting renewable energy, supporting scientific research, and advancing recovery policies for natural disasters.
