Christiaan Huygens was a Dutch mathematician, physicist, astronomer and inventor, a central figure of the seventeenth-century scientific revolution. He is known for formulating the wave theory of light, explaining refraction, reflection and rectilinear propagation, and for his studies of birefringence and double refraction in crystals. His Treatise on Light is the most cited work in this field.

In mechanics and mathematics, Huygens contributed to the understanding of conservation in dynamics, studied centrifugal force, investigated curves and began geometric interpretations of principles that foreshadowed differential calculus. He introduced the concept of the evolute and proved that the cycloid is an isochronous curve, applying that result to the design of isochronous pendulums.

He also worked in astronomy: he discovered the rings of Saturn and the moon Titan, contributions that secured his place in the history of planetary observation and later inspired the use of his name for major space missions. His education in an influential family and his exchanges with contemporaries such as Descartes, Mersenne and Spinoza helped enable his scientific work and its spread across Europe.
