Christopher Bernau was an American actor whose career spanned classical theatre and television soap operas. Trained in the Department of Dramatic Art at the University of California, he distinguished himself in major companies — including the New York Shakespeare Festival and the Stratford Festival in Canada — and appeared in productions of Antony and Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, experiences that established his presence on the 1960s theatre scene. At the end of the decade he debuted on television in Dark Shadows, playing Philip Todd in a notable story arc that brought him national attention. His television work reached its height with the role of the villain Alan Spaulding on Guiding Light, a character he played from 1977–1984 and 1986–1988, becoming his most emblematic part and earning him wide popular recognition. Over the course of his career he was also noted for his personal openness in a medium that was conservative for its time, a fact acknowledged by colleagues and the specialized press. Illness and advancing age forced him to leave the role; his career left a mark on stage and soap opera actors for combining classical training with a long presence in television entertainment.
