Chuck Close (Charles Thomas Close) was an American artist whose work redefined the relationship between painting and photography in the late 20th century. Trained at the University of Washington and Yale, he became known for large-scale portraits made from photographs, in which the image reads as a faithful likeness from a distance while, up close, it resolves into networks of small marks and spots — an approach that draws on photorealism, pointillism, and minimalism. His technique involved transferring photographs point by point onto enormous canvases, often with the assistance of studio assistants; notable examples include a black-and-white self‑portrait shown in New York in the 1970s and series depicting friends and figures from the art world. After a partial paralysis in 1988 he adapted his methods: he worked from a wheelchair, developed ways of painting that included using his mouth, and continued to produce large portraits. Institutional recognition is reflected in collections and exhibitions at major museums in the United States and Europe, including a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His legacy occupies the intersection of photography and painting and probes issues of scale, technique, and the representation of the human face.
