Charles Hugh “Chuck” Roberson was an American actor and stuntman whose career was built in film and television westerns from the 1940s to the 1970s. Raised on a ranch in New Mexico, Roberson started as a cowhand and worked as a studio guard before becoming a stuntman, becoming one of John Wayne’s stand‑ins and appearing in productions directed by Wayne and John Ford. Beyond action sequences, he played small and supporting roles in films such as Wyoming and Winchester '73.
On television he joined casts and made guest appearances in popular western series like The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Laredo and Disney’s The Swamp Fox and Texas John Slaughter. Alongside his on‑camera work, he gained experience as a second‑unit director, contributing to action scenes and coordinating stunts.
His personality and career earned him the nickname “Bad Chuck,” a nod to his reputation among colleagues, and in 1980 he published the memoir The Fall Guy: 30 Years as the Duke's Double. Roberson also worked offscreen, breeding and training racehorses on his California ranch. He died in 1988 and is remembered for his contributions to action cinema and for his many credits as a western stuntman and actor.
