Cissy Houston (born Emily Drinkard) was an American gospel and soul singer whose work as a session vocalist and choir leader shaped the music scene from the 1960s through the 1980s. First revealed within her family group, the Drinkard Singers, she rose to prominence as a member of the Sweet Inspirations, a backing vocal group that supported artists such as Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, and Elvis Presley, and she sang on key recordings by performers including Paul Simon, Bette Midler, and Linda Ronstadt. As a solo artist, she recorded several albums and singles between the late 1960s and the 1980s, including the original version of “Midnight Train to Georgia” and the disco hit “Think It Over,” which enjoyed notable R&B chart success. She represented the United States at international festivals and won awards for her performances. The mother of Whitney Houston and a member of a family of influential singers, Cissy played a formative role in the African American vocal tradition, remembered both for her skill in harmony and for her influence on later generations of performers. Her legacy endures in the history of soul, gospel, and the studio recordings on which she appeared.
