Matilde Luísa of Bavaria was a duchess by birth and, through her family, connected to the principal European courts of the 19th century. A granddaughter of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria, she was the younger sister of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (“Sissi”) and grew up in a dynastic environment that helped bind together German and Austrian royal houses. In 1861 she married Luigi, Count of Trani, the presumptive heir to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, in a union that strengthened ties between the Bourbon-Neapolitan line and Bavarian families. The marriage produced one daughter, Maria Teresa, who later married a prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. The historical context profoundly affected her life: the same year as her marriage she witnessed the conquest of the Two Sicilies by Giuseppe Garibaldi’s expedition and its annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia, which left her husband as head of a deposed royal house. He died in 1886; Matilde did not remarry and lived until 1925. Her biography reflects the political transformations of mid-19th-century Europe and the dynastic interweaving of royal houses, with a legacy centered on family networks and the connections between Italian and German monarchies.
