Clara Langhorne Clemens Samossoud was a concert contralto and the eldest surviving daughter of the writer Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). Trained vocally in Europe, she performed in major international halls in the early 20th century and was praised for a sweet, appealing timbre. In addition to her artistic career, she collaborated with pianists and took part in benefit concerts in London, Paris and the United States. After her father's death she became a careful administrator of his literary estate, deciding on the publication of letters and excerpts and donating a significant portion of the family library to the local institution. She published biographies of her husband Ossip Gabrilowitsch and of her father, recording personal memories and details of family life. She married conductor Ossip Gabrilowitsch and later married Jacques Samossoud. Over her life she explored different religious currents, ultimately joining Christian Science, on which she wrote. Her public role combined artistic activity with guardianship of Mark Twain’s legacy, shaping how the family’s work was edited and preserved.
