Clara Stern was a German‑American researcher who pioneered developmental psychology, best known for her collaboration with her husband, William Stern, in the systematic study of child development. Lacking formal university training, Clara took on the central task of keeping detailed diaries on the language, memory, and behavior of their three children over 18 years, producing roughly 5,000 handwritten pages that became a rare and valuable empirical resource for the field. The Sterns’ records enabled early observations on language acquisition, self‑reference, and the emergence of the capacity to lie, and provided the basis for ideas about the role of play in personal development. Publications from 1907 and 1909, such as Child Language and Recollection, Testimony & Lying, integrated these observations into the then‑emerging literature on child psychology, influencing both scientific research and practical debates—for example, on assessing the veracity of children’s testimony. The couple exemplified a model of intellectual collaboration within the household in which Clara’s contribution was essential, though often not formally credited. The Sterns’ career, interrupted by exile under Nazism, and the legacy of their longitudinal data remain historically and methodologically important for studies of development, language, and the ethics of research with children.
