Claude Vorilhon, better known as Rael, is a French spiritual leader and founder of the Raelian Movement, a group with a UFO-centered ideology that rose to prominence in the 1970s. A former sports journalist and singer, Vorilhon devoted himself to publishing a series of books in which he recounts encounters with alleged extraterrestrial beings—the “elohim”—who, according to him, created life on Earth and guided humanity through historical prophets.
His early work states that these intelligences delivered messages to him about human origins and provided instructions to prepare for the return of the elohim, including the symbolic construction of an embassy. Over the decades Vorilhon has published titles on genetics, cloning, meditation and a proposal for social reorganization based on intellectual merit, topics that form the doctrinal core of the movement.
The Raelian Movement became known for its public stances on reproductive science, human cloning and secularism, and has sparked debates and controversies in France and internationally. Vorilhon’s legacy includes both the creation of a global community dedicated to his ideas and the discussions his teachings provoked in religious and bioethical arenas.
