Colleen Kay Hutchins was a public figure known for her involvement in beauty pageants and for family connections to prominent athletes. Born in Arcadia, California, she became prominent on campus when she was chosen homecoming queen at Brigham Young University in 1947. Her most notable victory came in 1952, when she won the Miss America title, becoming the first representative from Utah to receive the crown.
Beyond her public role as a figure of image and representation, Hutchins’s family life was marked by sporting ties: her brother Mel played professional basketball, and she married athlete Ernie Vandeweghe, with whom she had four children, including Kiki Vandeweghe, who was also involved in basketball, and Tauna, who was an Olympic swimmer. She is the grandmother of professional tennis player CoCo Vandeweghe.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints, she lived in southern California cities in the following decades and died in 2010 at age 83. Her public legacy is mainly associated with the Miss America title and the visibility it brought to women from Utah at the time.
